(and I'm not sure which is worse--the ones that are obviously manips, or the ones that aren't obvious, but could not be real in any way, shape or form.)

It's a toss-up, isn't it?
I'm glad people get enjoyment out of that creative endeavour. I'm just not on board.
Oh yeah, freaky and kind of, well I hate to say it but rude and what's the word I need? Intrusive?
I don't doubt the skills on some of them though, others are just freaky because they so obviously aren't real and your eyes send you brain that message and it's really uncomfortable.
I can't disagree. Manips and RPF are both...very hard for me to understand. It's one thing, to me, to play with characters but when it comes to the real people attached to those characters? A line I just couldn't cross.

Well you know me, I never dismiss anything totally until I've tried it - ummmm yeah, I tried a couple of RPF's a while ago when I was bored out of my skull, one left me feeling a little like a peeping tom - reality TV for writers? The other was an AU and to be honest it was original fiction without the finesse and skills to create original characters, just stuck on familiar faces, just like a manip I suppose. No, have to say I just don't get it either.
I don't feel the need to imagine my friends naked, neither would I expect a total stranger to strip so I could photograph his dangly bits, I was always taught that a guy who strips you naked with his eyes was a lecherous bastard, it seems times have changed or are the rules different for women?
The very sexual ones freak me out because they falsely imply an actor's willingness to participate in a particular type of scene. Also? The bodies they typically choose for those things look nothing like the actor's so it's double weird, like seeing an eagle's head on a lion's body.
I've seen some manips that aren't sexual and they fail to freak me out but I don't really "get" it, either. I suppose it's good practice on Photoshop and it obviously gives people enjoyment. Luckily for them, their fun doesn't depend on my getting it. :)
Agreed on the sexual ones. Some of them also provoke the wrong experience -- as in, I don't find them hot, and am instead usually laughing my ass off. :) Or being freaked out...

I've owned slash zines in the past, and I'd always have to cover up at least half of the artwork while I was reading because it would disconcert me so much I couldn't enjoy the stories.
And, yeah, the bodies hardly ever come close to matching. I have no problem enjoying those bodies (well, the really porno ones make me squirm, because some male parts ain't that attractive, if I'm going to be honest). I'd just prefer the real faces were still on them. Heh.
