Personally?

I think that in a discussion about Vala on Stargate when someone brings up the previous misdeeds of any member of SG-1 in comparison to her actions, the debate is then forfeit just like that one rule about invoking Nazism.
Because it's just insane.
Because it's just insane.

Date: 2006-04-12 07:48 pm (UTC)And yes, I tend to agree with you. Every character has their flaws and their own history and their own misdeeds... and none of them have anything to do with Vala. I can see making comparisons with Teal'c, because they were both slaves to the Goa'uld, but only up to the point where she was freed from Qetesh. Everything she did after that, she did of her own free will.

Date: 2006-04-12 09:44 pm (UTC)Teal'c's sitch does not equal Vala's to me. :)
And I know you didn't need the lecture. I was just getting it out of my system. ;)

Date: 2006-04-12 10:11 pm (UTC)No problems. Hey, if you want a token Vala fan to beat up on every now and again, feel free. I'm perfectly willing to play voodoo doll for you. Just warn me in advance that you're going to, so I don't think you hate me or anything. :)
And to help you out... I've got an icon for just such a purpose. Let it loose. I promise I won't even stomp away or yell at you.

Date: 2006-04-12 09:20 pm (UTC)But then I'm the person who got all annoyed b/c the new season promo I saw the other night had mostly Mitchell, Vala and Landry in it. If i knew how to do captures I'd make a "real" promo.

Date: 2006-04-12 09:47 pm (UTC)I don't watch Sci Fi on a regular basis, so I missed the promos. Thank goodness. I'm tellin' ya, it's not SG-1 anymore. It's All About the Newbies. (Aren't they pretty and shiny and FUN?)

Date: 2006-04-12 11:56 pm (UTC)Of course its about telling us everything & shoving down our throats when it comes to new characters instead of doing, oh, the creative thing & letting us discover the character's worth over time in relation to the true stars of the show.

EX-ACTLY. sheesh, didn't learn a thing from the whole JQ thing. Its also about aren't they pretty & shiny & fun and they're "better" because they look like those people on some other show. Thats what burns me about it, like the character credibility should carry over to SG1 or something. I certainly have not watched, or tried to watch, for 9 years because of those other people.
::wanders off still grumbling::
(friday nights are good for classic sg1 dvd nights you know)

Date: 2006-04-13 06:03 am (UTC)Yep. Some do.
Me, I find Vala entertaining and dynamic mostly due to the acting of Claudia Black. That doesn't absolve Vala of her crimes anymore than it would anyone else. She's done some pretty bad things that she's never had to pay for (yes, a comparison to other SG1 members could be inserted here).
Maybe it's human nature to say, "This person did that, oh, but by comparson so-and-so did this and wasn't punished for it?" I don't know. Normally, when I get pissed at a character, I'm pissed at that character for that reason regardless of what the other characters have done or what the consequences were.
Unfortunately, I think more comparisons will be heard. We've got another season coming.

Date: 2006-04-13 10:50 am (UTC)I love Claudia's work, but really, Vala doesn't "fit" into the show as it is... er, was. As a guest character, she could shake things up. I didn't care for Vala all that much, but the early eps this season were a bit better. I don't hate her, but I can't see what she has to offer as a regular.
I'm afraid the show has gone beyond casting changes and will be beyond recognition now. As far as watching the show goes, it's already moved into the "watch it if you remember" category, and that's more to keep up with fandom than anything. I don't even watch the Friday night repeat now, I watch USA's repeats of House instead. It's nice to find writers who don't insult my intelligence, and seem to not only know about slashers, but loves us. :)

Date: 2006-04-13 04:44 am (UTC)I've managed to miss the promos, but somehow I'm not surprised to hear they feature the new. Sci Fi has always done silly promos and they often choose what I think of as the wrong tactic.

Date: 2006-04-13 08:39 am (UTC)I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't more people out here who don't like Vala but don't have the energy to explain why over and over and OVER again.

Date: 2006-04-13 10:10 am (UTC)I like the energy Claudia Black brings to the set - and I think the actress earned her nomination for that burning scene - but it's clear to me that the writers prefer to write Vala. She's new; she's shiney; she can whatever backstory pops into their brains and they don't have to bother with 7 or 8 years of established backstory. To me, it often feels like she's having the more fun than the other actors on set, but that's highly subjective, influenced by final cuts, and I've been known to be wrong before.
**Do I really have to put in a disclaimer that I consider myself a Michael Shanks fan? And a Daniel fan?

Date: 2006-04-14 06:43 am (UTC)I've now put ALL Vala threads on ignore....actually I think most of the forum is now on ignore - I just can't take the comparisons anymore. What really bugs me is that it's the same comparisons that were levelled at the Jonas argument....only from the other direction which totally baffles me.
Everyone knows by now that I'm not a Vala fan. WEll actually it would be easy to get that impression but....Vala as she WAS in PU and the first couple of episode was a GOOD character. She was annoying and over the top and manipulative and a lying thieving cheating bitch. I liked her. AT long last a female character that was BAD and not a wlking talking cliche from the 50s.
But go back and read the threads about those stories and nearly every poster was saying Yes I like her but I couldnt' do with her all the time she would have to be toned down.
And guess what? The no brainer ball-less writers did just that. And now we have the Sainted Mother figure oozing redemtion like a sieve. That's the Vala I can't stand. The one who can get a free pass on everything because she is now worthy! Worthy my Ass! After her Goa'uld left she made choices. Kendra (SP??) made choices too and so I have to guess did Sarah Gardner.
But I'm not debating any longer because it's become so much more than a debate it's become defensive and once again those on one side will decide to move on.
