I find this both amusing and disturbing.

Seriously, I'll bet my father is losing sleep over this. Aside from his and my mom's frenzied need to save all unborn babies, gun control is number two on dear old dad's issues on which to vote. It doesn't matter that, in their class and demographic, the GOP has never, ever done much at all for them in practical terms as long as abortion be made illegal again and people are allowed to have their semi-automatic weapons.

Well, for the first 17 years or so of my life I was so insulated all I knew was their way, and so I was a good little robot. Not six months out of the house, and I began to see how closed-off I'd been.

I haven't talked to my parents since the election, but, yeah, I assume doom and gloom from their end. Which is, I suppose, exactly how I'd be if the opposite outcome had been gained. ;)

Well, geez it's just not sporting to kill anyone BEFORE he can run away and hide -- or go hunting with the VeeP. (I have to get in those Cheney jokes while I can because I won't be able to for much longer. YAY!!!!!!!!!!)

I love my dad, but I don't understand how he thinks at all. He uses his gun for sport, fair enough. He eats what he shoots. But how that means there shouldn't be stricter gun controls, especially for weapons you know are not for hunting game is beyond me. You don't take your Glock out into the sloughs and shoot at mallards with it.

I'm not sure if you know this so forgive me for repeating history, but about ten years ago we had a madman shoot a bunch of people in Tasmania and ever since, we've had very tight gun laws. Basically you can't have one in your personal possession unless you're a farmer (shooting wild animals and all that) or a member of the armed forces where the gun isn't even YOURS, it belongs to the Aus armed forces. We still have illegal arms ownership, of course, but I grew up with those laws so I don't really understand the US's fascination with arms ownership. What does it achieve? How are people better off owning guns? I realise that sounds niave but I really am curious.

Who the heck knows? Back when that amendment was written, I think the idea was a tad different than what we've got. Guns were used for hunting - food staple, yo. They'd just come out of a war - protection. All those red-skinned savages ::rollseyes:: running around - more protection.

Now, see, I don't think much of that is valid. Guns = more senseless death.

I remember my father getting very upset at me because I wore a Pearl Jam T-shirt around the house one day - on the back it said something like "ten out of ten children prefer crayons to guns." That offended him. His offense confused the bejeebers out of me. It still does.
