SPN: Ghostfacers (Meh)

Meh. I have to own my prejudice right upfront: anything by Ben Edlund automatically gets a few marks off, because I find him juvenile and without any real grasp on the Dean and Sam I love so much.
More marks off because I don't really dig episodes from outside perspective. Roadkill was better on second watching, but I doubt it for this one.
I also don't care for the extended "Then" segment. I hate when shows do that in general, to be honest. I know it's supposed to serve as a recap for viewers without memories or new viewers, but when they show so damned much it rather ruins it for me. "Warning: this episode will contain this, this, this and this...we don't want you to strain yourselves or be pleasantly surprised by anything."
I'm not sold that this particular spoof episode was a good one to start with after a long hiatus. Why? Because the opening without sign of Sam and Dean was boring. If I had been a viewer just happening by, I wouldn't have made it past minute 3. It was standard CW fare, and, well, pretty much remained that way throughout. As amused as I always am by Hell House, I could have gone very happily without seeing Ed or Harry again.
It wasn't without its moments, of course. I did enjoy that Sam and Dean have the potty mouths prime time network TV wouldn't allow them to have. I'm glad, for the record, they can't swear on the show; I don't find it offensive, but I do find it boring. It's not edgy to me, hearing people say fuck and shit and other worse things. Maybe because I hear it from 12 year olds on the bus every day. But there's simply no way if they were real boys they wouldn't be swearing up a storm with what they do and see every day.
Nice angst from Dean when Sam up and disappeared, though it would have been bet-ter had the episode been shot as a real one and not a spoof of Ghost Hunters.
I mean, wouldn't it have been more...uhm, interesting, to see Sam interacting with the ghost instead of having him just telling us what the ghost told him? That's what bugs me about this kind of episode. We don't get the emotional investment in the right place, IMO. I don't care that Harry snogs Ed's sister. I don't care that poor Corbett has unrequited love for Ed and that's what saves the day (cue eye roll). I don't care about those people. I care about Dean and Sam.
Anyway. I'll stop now and just play myself a sad, sad song on a mini-violin.
Poor Dean. Two months. :(
Both boys looked good, Dean especially. I can't help it. It's Sam's hair. I wish Sam would have JP's hair. Have I said that before? I know it doesn't make much sense, but when I see JP as...JP, his hair doesn't bother me. When he's Sam, though, it somehow becomes unflattering. How is that even possible? Hmmm. Someone write a letter to the show hair and make up people. Stat.
(Oh, look, Zipacna's on Lost. That dude gets around.)
I liked the music choices, but they were overshadowed by the stupid arse "Ghostfacers" crap.
Ultimately, this was too guest character focused for my particular enjoyment. Next week looks interesting. I wish we'd see you know who in person instead of getting a disembodied voice, but...beggars can't be choosers. ;)

Date: 2008-04-25 08:24 pm (UTC)I dread Edlund, I really do, he doesn't seem to write for THIS show, he seems to write for himself, well actually his 13 year old alter ego.
It was nice to hear a bit of better music, almost cheered when we heard the Impala coming, but that was about 10 minutes in and I was bored to bloody tears by then and infuriated by the flashes and wobbly cameras.
Funnily enough in my head Dean and Sam have always had potty mouths so that didn't really impress me either, I agree the whole thing was just meh! Dean was very pretty though shoving that cupboard out of the way, but did we have to have ANOTHER gay joke running theme which was bordering on the offensive....and I so agree about Sam's hair. God that's shallow, but heck it wasn't as though I had anything else to look at! :(
I don't think I'll ever watch this one again, first for me, I've even watched Red Sky twice!

Date: 2008-04-25 09:38 pm (UTC)Yes, I think that's part of it, along with a tendency to write more about the guest characters than Sam and Dean. Even Nightshifter, which I did like, was very dependent on Ronald. Something about how he writes is removed, like he could plug-n-play the plot for any number of shows.
Which isn't what I want. I want my show.

I was simply thankful they managed to make it not quite as "funny," by having Ed actually show some real emotion for the poor dead kid with a crush on him.

Poor JP. The makeup artists do him no favors. He's at times quite stunning in his own right, but that hair, it just does nothing but detract.

Show's camera work never does him justice, don't know why.
Top of my list for next year?
Scruffy boys! PLEASE..oh pretty pretty please, I'm so tired of this scrubbed up look on both, Dean used to look really edgy and a bit dangerous and poor Sam, for pity's sake he's not still 12 ya know? Let both guys look like GUYS. Ok, kinky rant done with...hehe...

Date: 2008-04-26 04:35 am (UTC)I didn't notice that commercial, but I saw him in The Butterfly Effect, too. He was made up to look Hispanic. In the commentary they said they wanted a Hispanic character and couldn't find anyone in Vancouver. I never would have recognized him except for his name.

I feel the same way.

I bet it wouldn't have been their choice if they'd had a choice. OTOH, with these PTB, I don't really know. *g*

Me too! I don't know why, but I feel the same way. Whatever they've been doing to Sam's (Jared's) hair since the beginning of season 2 is not good.
I liked your observations, and pretty much agree with all of it, except I think you liked Hell House more than I did, but I didn't hate that episode. It was cute and fun, and, like you, I really wouldn't have cared if I'd never seen the two ghost hunter guys again.

Date: 2008-04-26 07:26 pm (UTC)Frankly, given the limited number of episodes they got after the strike, I'm a bit disappointed this one made the cut at all. It...no. Waste of my time as a viewer!

It's really distracting at times. Usually when the episode isn't holding my attention, like this one.
I liked the Sam/Dean bits of this one. There just weren't enough of them, and I still don't like the removed feeling you get when it's from someone else's POV. Been there, done that. Besides, most viewers must know how Sam and Dean look to the average, unsuspecting fake TV characters. It's not tough to deduce, and I personally don't need to see it.
