UPS, II

The story has a happy ending. After leaving an annoyed email at being unable to reroute or reschedule delivery of my very important package (No, really, it is. It's a new bag and my old one is coming apart at the bottom seams.), I did not get the response they promised to give within 24 hours. I was resigned to having to go pick up the bag at whatever will call station UPS has, and you can bet your sweet bippy it wouldn't be at the UPS store just down the street.

However, I got home tonight and saw a package in the office. S. had gone home, but he frequently signs for me. Yay! Then I actually got into my apartment and had two lengthy voice messages from UPS, explaining the situation.

I'm grateful to have the package, but still kind of resent that I only had one shot at signing (technically - the driver was supposed to have removed the package from his truck and didn't).

Whee.

I used to know two UPS drivers. Their excuse was that no one was ever home when they did ring bells, so they felt no obligation to do more than run to the door, slap on a yellow slip, and run back to the truck. It's a really half-ass company.

Glad you got your package, though!

Wow. Really? Those guys should be fired. *g*

Nothing like that has ever happened to me. The only time anything weird happened was when I went to the tracking page and there was a note saying that the truck had caught fire on the way to deliver the package. The delivered it a day late, though, and everything was fine otherwise.

Otherwise, I've always found UPS to be extremely reliable. Often packages arrive very quickly. Things always come when they say they will--unlike with the USPS. I mostly use 2nd Day Air for most things, but ground delivery usually only takes a few days. It's just that sometimes it can take more than a week. I guess I've been lucky to have good delivery people wherever I've lived.

I've never had them just not deliver a package, though, as mentioned in the other post, they do just drop them on the front porch, ring the bell, and then run off. I'm fine with that, though, because I'm usually home or will be home soon.

For me, it's depended on where I lived. I've run into these problems in multiple areas, but when I lived in a suburb of Nashville, UPS was pretty good. So it must depend on the attitude of the local office or something. It can't be the driver, because I've always had a variety of drivers everywhere I've lived.

Can't do that at an apartment, though, which is why they just slap a sticker on the door and run without even checking to see if you're home. And yes, I have witnessed this on several occasions, since I often get home from work at the same time they hit my building on their route. ;)

I think it might be both the local office and the drivers. I think I've just been lucky.

*g* When I lived in Alaska (in a apartment) that never happened. I'm trying to remember if they ever left packages or not, but I don't remember. At every house we've lived, though, they always left packages out front, as far as I remember. The island where we lived in AK didn't have UPS Ground, though, just 2nd Day Air. The other options were FedEx and the USPS--and some places wouldn't ship to us. Period. I ordered most things priority mail as that was the cheapest besides media mail, which would take (not kidding) 21 days at the least, or regular mail which would also sometimes take quite a long time. Even priority mail would sometimes take over a week.

Anyway, not that this has anything to do with anything. *g*

Yeah, I meant to mention that in my current apartment, I have one driver who will bring the packages upstairs to my door, which is really nice, though the other drivers generally slap a notice and run. So you're right, it's partly up to the drivers. But it's also up to the company to get them doing what they're supposed to do.

I'm glad it finally arrived anyway. How did UPS explain the situation?
