How do people justify to themselves saying things like, "The death rate isn't bad enough for shutting down everything." or "The people dying are already compromised, frail or sick."?
Like, what IS the magic ratio for them? And the value of a life is not based on the person's age or health, and dismissing the danger as only impacting people who are sick is just gross.
Ironically, both things came from someone who is a devout Catholic, the "every sperm is sacred" religion. Apparently life is only precious if its still in the womb? I don't know. Gross.
I had to just walk away. Couldn't even point out the death rate would likely be very much higher if we had let it just run rampant, didn't have the energy to combat her. Am I tired of not being able to simply stroll into Home Depot for my needed spring gardening stuff? Sure, but it's not the end of the world.
Also, I am for a slow reopen, but I simply don't trust people to be reasonable. As demonstrated by people claiming their civil liberties are being infringed on by the government because they're being asked to stay home most of the time.

Date: 2020-05-03 10:37 pm (UTC)I guess I'm sort of lucky. MA isn't doing awful but the death rates in nursing homes is just staggering (>50% of the deaths total) but there aren't any signs we are reopening soon. The whole state is now under a masks in public rule, which is good.

Date: 2020-05-06 02:29 am (UTC)Listen, I get it. It's getting old real fast, but the thing is - with this thing you could literally be walking around with it, not know it, never show it, but spread it everywhere you go. And my county - rural - sent from 7 confirmed cases since this started on Friday to 19 by Monday.
Do we really want to open too quickly because we're listless? The economy is already hosed. Employers are already thinking of ways to tighten their belts, I guarantee it.

*True story, twice in a week Walter had to endure the insult of being called a "teeny tiny dog" by a teeny tiny boy and also someone saying my dog looked like a cat from a distance and that was why their dog was going nuts. Well, I never. Walter believes he is at least 60 lbs. He's 15.
