Jolinar's Memories

I like this episode a lot. I tried taking notes, but found myself too caught up in the story to do so - that's such a great thing about the early SG-1 years, isn't it?
Ah, Jolinar. I really wish they'd kept pushing that storyline for Sam. It was filled with such potential, and from more than a personal "Martouf/Jolinar/Sam" angle that it tended to revolve around. Here they had this person with possible Tok'ra memories, and they never did much of real consequence with it. A shame for the character of Sam, I think.
And while I don't believe for a minute the Tok'ra wouldn't have gotten Jolinar's escape route out of her (I don't even buy that she wouldn't openly tell them the how, if not the dirty details), I can overlook it because it was kind of cool seeing 3/4 of SG-1 in Hell. Poor Teal'c, left on the sidelines! He plays a very important role here, but I still always prefer the team together when I can get it. Of course, even if he's not down there, it's still all about the team in this one. ;)
I enjoy the slight ruthlessness of Martouf. I know it's a strange thing to appreciate, but it effectively highlights the difference between humans and Tok'ra in a way that's not anvil-heavy. He's all about the Big Scheme, forsaking the smaller pictures within it. Fair enough, but undoubtedly not the way most people think (read: Jack). I enjoy the friction between Jack and Martouf for just this reason. Jack gets the Big Scheme, but he also values more than that, and to him it's just as important to get Jacob out of there. If not for Jacob, then for a member of his team.
One of my favorite Daniel/Sam moments happens here, too. It's not anything spectacular at all when Daniel approaches her after her memory-device incident. There's just a nice feeling to the scene, like you're watching two people connect on a level that's deeper than words, you know? I might be imagining it.
It's always a delight to see Jacob/Selmac, too. I have always had a wee crush on him, I have to admit.
Quite a few subtle little J/D moments here and there, where their unlikely friendship is highlighted without many words at all. I always love when they speak in unison, even just one little word.
Oh, and Daniel was yummy.
And this episode is filled with good quotes:
"Of all the gods he chose to impersonate, he chose the devil."
"As long as you are all sure you understand what you have volunteered for."
"You said hell, right?"
"Well, I"m going to end up there sooner or later. Might as well check out the neighborhood, eh?"
"By all means, to hell with us!"
"Anh, anh, anh! I know, I heard you, and forgive the bravado, but it's been done before - it can be done again." (Jack, on escaping Hell. I love that Jack, capable and sure.)
"That's, uh, that's still a long way down."
"The pods are launched at a great velocity."
"And that's supposed to make me feel better, or...."
"Are you prepared?"
"Uh, no, not really." (Love the way Jack says it so matter-of-factly, and the way Teal'c almost smiles.)
If this were airing live and right now, I would so be chomping at the bit for the second half. Hee. As it is, I don't want to wait for next Sunday to finish.

Date: 2008-04-22 04:16 pm (UTC)What a waste.
Of course, I'm highly noromo for this show. I always found it consternating when people brought up questions about romance for any of the characters at Q&As and conventions. (I'm suffering a similar affliction for SPN fandom. Who the *bleep* really thinks Sam or Dean could have a permanent love interest? Good grief, are they not watching that show at all?)
Sorry, tangent.

Date: 2008-04-22 07:36 pm (UTC)There was so much good about Jolinar's memories. I really loved the Sam/Jacob moments in this ep, as well as the general teamy moments it had.
And I also agree with the tangent ;-)
