About a billion years ago, I rewatched/commented on old SG-1 episodes. I don't really know why I stopped. I think it had to do with summer rolling around. ;) I hope to be back at it, and am picking up where I left off: Forever in a Day.
sigh FIAD is such a lovely episode. It's about as layered an ep as TPTB ever managed to give us, I think, with all dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream going on. (Changeling was great for this, too, and it's no coincidence I love both episodes.)
Let me first just get this out of my system: Daniel was simply delectable throughout this episode. I wanted to eat him up with a spoon. S3 is my favorite for all of them, actually. But since the focus here was heavy on the Daniel, I...spent most of the 42 minutes wanting to hug him to death. And maybe wanting to do other things, too. I'm ashamed of myself for drooling when it was such a wrenching episode. Really.
(You can't blame me, can you, when the episode starts out with hand porn and just gets better and better as far as Daniel eye candy goes?)
Speaking of hand porn, I've always really dug the way real time was measured. The fall of Daniel's handgun, from when it slipped from his fingers to when it clattered to the floor, was poignant and served as a great cue to the audience how things happened. (I seem to recall some being confused by this episode, and Changeling, too, but I've never understood why.)
I appreciate that this gave Daniel the chance to grieve we probably never would have seen at all if they had, say, killed Sha're at the end of an episode. Sure, this was convenient and fast, but it's important to remember later that Daniel had much longer to cope than any of his friends realize. (Still, I'll gripe about this next episode anyway.) It's so sad to watch him go through the stages, even if it's only happening in his head.
Some absolutely beautiful scenes between Daniel and Sam, Daniel and Jack and Daniel and Teal'c. The infirmary/pen scene always makes me get a lump in my throat, as does the scene when Daniel's packing up his office. And who can forget the hug scene at the apartment?
But for me, this episode was made by the D/T scenes. Poor, poor Teal'c. Even in made-up land, he's so upset at having to take Sha're away from Daniel again, for the final time. The morgue scene (SOB!), the scene by the elevator, the gateroom scene where Daniel forgives him, all just gold. And we must not forget about the kel no reem scene - gorgeous. It's the "Yes, Daniel" and the look in Teal'c's eyes when Daniel finally makes contact...
They were all so connected back then. It's a thing of beauty to watch even now. I could go on and on and on - I welcome anyone to chime in here, though.
The final scene? More sobs. Again, the look on Teal'c's face when Daniel tells him that he did the right thing is subtle and awful and wonderful. Chris Judge did such a great job with Teal'c, and it was often overlooked. It's magnificent, really, what the guy can do without uttering a word.
Daniel and Sha're lying there, facing each other breaks my heart (and I'm not a huge Sha're fan).
FIAD is not without its faults, though. I still rather hate that they killed Daniel's quest only to replace it with another. I hate that they set him up to be only driven by these guests, when I like to believe he stuck around for more than his own personal need/want. I think that's where they could have improved with Daniel, in the grand scheme.
Favorite quotes:
"Smart guy. Had a good teacher."
"Geek."
"Yes, he used to call me that."
"I was talking about you."
"Now every time I go through, it'll just be some...place, where that hope used to be."
"Hey, Daniel."
"Hi...how'd you get in here?"
"You left the base before we could catch you. We thought we'd stop by and see you here."
"How'd you get in here?"
"Got sick of waiting in the hall, so I let us in. You need a new lock, by the way."
"Yes, Daniel." (I think I like this because Teal'c so rarely calls Daniel by his given name only.)
"Daniel Jackson, it pleases me greatly that once again you value my knowledge."
"Deja vu."
"Deja vu."
"Deja vu."
"Now see, I miss that. I have no idea what he means, but I buy it."
"So, Bruce Jenner, sit this one out, huh?" (And I giggle at Rothman's exiting salute. There is no love lost between him and Jack, LOL.)
I could probably say a whole helluva lot more about this episode. It's nice to be able to watch FIAD after so many years and still think it's a pretty damned good hour of television.
