Hathor

Hathor makes me cringe for the very simple fact that it never should have happened. It kind of offends my sensibilities as a woman that these doofuses assumed that Hathor was no threat even though she used the royal we and gave several creepy insinuations that she knew all about Ra...because she was a woman. If they hadn't treated her with kid gloves and instead as any other threat, none of it would have happened. I sincerely doubt that if it had been a male walking into Cheyenne Mountain with priveledged information that the treatment would have been identical.

It just bugs me, that's all.

Once they're whammied, I suppose I could give a little leeway, but I never seem to be able to because I'm looped back around to being irritated that they weren't savvy enough to avoid the whammy in the first place.

Okay, got that off my chest. The idea of Hathor, while repugnant from one side of feminism isn't completely horrible. I did like Sam and Janet and the rest of the nameless females on the base kicking ass and taking names. But then, I would expect no less in the situation. They proved that women shouldn't be dismissed as threats all by themselves.

There were a couple of cute moments - Daniel explaining to Jack and George that Hathor was the goddess of sex, drugs and rock and roll was cute just for the way in which he and Jack parlayed a little.

Jack called Hathor Miss Hath Whore. I heard it. I know he did it.

"Is mental illness contagious?" and the story about the woman down on 73rd who talks to the little devils in her hair make me giggle.

"You're...you're like a queen bee," Daniel said with awe. *snort*

I think this was the first of the very few canonical and often abused fanonically "Dannys."

Why on Earth was Jack walking around base without a T-shirt on? Oh, yeah, so he could become a Jaffa later.

I'm confused about how Daniel is Hathor's chosen one, but at the end she calls Jack, the lowly servant near-Jaffa her love. Er...wha?

And don't even get me going about Sam and Janet finding Daniel in a catatonic state and not even thinking twice about it (yeah, they were busy) or the fact that it's assumed later that Daniel was a consenting participant in the whole DNA gathering Hathor did. (All Jack has to say is "ew?")

I dunno, I guess I've never left a guy in a traumatized catatonia after sex so I probably can't relate. Is that perfectly normal and I'm just not doing it right?

Me either. I think we need to go talk to Lady Heather.

OMG. I'm picturing HER as a Goa'uld, and the idea has its fascinating merits...

Hey, I've been married for 7 years. I'm still trying to remember what sex is. ;)

She was looking for a threesome. I just know she was. Or maybe I'm just projecting.

I've been loaning a few boxsets to a guy friend of mine, and when he saw Hathor, he was all like "OMG SHE'S SO HOT I WISH I WAS DANIEL SO I COULD GET SOME OF HATHOR LOL OMG I WOULD SO HIT THAT *THIS* MANY TIMES." That's when I decided that males and females are going to see this episode in entirely different lights. I was mad that Daniel got raped and no one even addressed this issue. My friend was mad because Hathor wasn't naked enough. Go figure.

Thank God for Sam and Janet and the rest of the women on the base. They proved that having a Y chromosome makes you stupid. At least when Hathor's around. Speaking of which, wasn't Hathor trying to flirt with Sam, too?

Jack called Hathor Miss Hath Whore. I heard it. I know he did it.

He did. I heard it, too.

Hehehe...as soon as you figure it out, write a book about it. I'd buy that.

So Hathor's power over men is not even limited to the SHOW alone. Hathor's Legacy lives on.

But it's really sad we haven't seen much of those women since then.

I think TPTB just couldn't deal with the idea of male rape in any fashion. I'm sure if they gave it a little more thought, the idea that Jack was to be an incubator for a creature with part of Daniel's DNA would have made their heads explode. It was MPreg in the making! *g*

It does seem like whenever a female character in any show is using their "feminine wiles" they have to be drop-dead gorgeous. Average women need not apply. But men can be average looking and no one would think a thing about women flocking to him.

Seth used something similar, but he wasn't necessarily using it as a sexual attractant, it was just to ensure control over his flock of men and women. Spoilers indicate we'll have an "irresitable" man on SGA next season, so I'm curious to see how they handle it there.

That's what I meant -- they can't deal with the idea because it's just not something they can wrap their mind around.

There's a myth that because a man has to get it up, he can't be raped by a woman. Especially with a "Goa'uld roofie" in his system, that would take down Daniel's inhibitions and control. He could have sex with her, but not be fully aware of what's happening during or after.

Some things about this episode annoyed me, but I think I was so blown over by the Janet and Sam awesomeness that I couldn't spare any attention for them. I've only seen it once, though.

Jack called Hathor Miss Hath Whore. I heard it. I know he did it.

Oh, man, that is SO him. I wish I had heard it.

That's the episode that most bends the characters out of shape. Hammond and Jack are idiots for not realizing she's a security risk. When they find Daniel catatonic, Janet's too gung-ho about her gun-toting to go check on him, as she instinctively does every other time she's in the presence of anyone who's so much as acting a little off.

And of course, the complete failure to recognize drug rape for what it is proves the writers are ignorant to the point of malignant. Men ARE raped by women via drugs. TPTB perpetuate the idea that men raped by women should be grateful they got some.

I'm not much on demanding show's reflect my personal values, but I do hold them accountable for perpetuating misguided ideas about things as devastating as rape.

I have the sneaking suspicion that when this episode was written they didn't even considered the word "rape" and were a bit surprised when viewers saw it for what it was.

It was so sunk in their schoolboy bike shed humour that they honestly didn't see how stupid it was or how traumatic and dramatic it should have been.
