The Broca Divide

It's episodes like these that make me remember acting is a job,
because there's NO way I could ever believeably pull off such an
embarrassing role. Tee hee. I'm sure the science in this one made
people cringe, but I don't care about that. Seeing SG-1 become
primitive was far more cringeworthy. That said...I really like this
episode, even though I sometimes have to wince and shield my eyes.
I'd forgotten they mentioned interviewing the refugees from CotG
before sending them home - I'm glad for that tidbit. Definitely
answered at least some of my questions about that.
I found it interesting that Hammond had to look away when he told
them the MALP "must have been damaged during transport". It's a bunk
statement and he knows it.
Loved Daniel in the opening scene especially.
"Can't we think of a better name to call it?" is a sentiment I can
get behind. Of course, I think he gets used to the Pwhatever-whatever
designations pretty quickly.
Favorite exchange:
"Don't you worry, boys, that's why the SG3 Marines are coming with
you. You can count on us to watch your backsides."
Pause.
"Actually, it's more my front side I was worried about."
*snicker*
I also adored Daniel ushering Jack through after a very good point
about the already stereotyped "shoot first, ask questions later"
Marines.
Once planetside, I have to admit the attack was pretty scary. Gotta
love how they just forge right ahead, though. I don't know why, but
I'd assume getting mauled first thing would be a good cause to turn
around and go home. But not our people!
The rape scene always makes me pause. I honestly don't know what they
should have done. Part of me totally agrees with Sam, and part of me
understands Daniel. Thank goodness for the mysteriously robed figures
slinging rocks, who they easily dismiss as not a Goa'uld threat by
looking at the back of their necks. Nice try, but TOTALLY not a
foolproof method, there, Jack. ;)
Interesting initial interaction with Tuplo and that lady (did we get
a name for her?). "We know only of their presence because of their
actions." is a pretty good way to sum up early religion...or even
modern religion. Clearly the bad gods are real, or else the Untouched
wouldn't turn into Touched.
The debriefing afterwards. Bless Daniel. He's so emphatic about
pushing for cultural and scientific focus on missions that he doesn't
even realize when to shut up. Awww. I don't quite get why Sam was the
one to explain the Broca Divide, though. They should have just let
Daniel finish that bit - would have made a lot more sense, even if
that's not HIS specialty, either, it's closer than theorhetical
astrophysics.
Johnson - now there's an example of prejudice against Teal'c, because
they had the lovely intuition to foreshadow him attacking T in the
first scene. If he's got issues with T, you can bet your sweet bippy
there are others...
The locker room scene. Embarrassing. Very embarrassing. Won't say any
more.
Janet. LOVE Janet. She's got no clue what's going on, but she's very
much in charge and is calm, at least on the outside. Where the locker
room made me cringe and felt very forced, I noticed real, natural
chemistry between her and Jack.
Scattered quotes/moments:
Mr. Teal'c. Mr. Teal'c! Tee hee!
"We dump them in a little room. There is no difference."
Teal'c called out for Daniel once. Just Daniel, not Daniel Jackson.
And then the scene where he tells Jack he lost Daniel on the dark
side...poor Teal'c. He really looked so upset that he'd failed.
"How can you be so without heart?"
Daniel trying to get away from the Touched, only to get beat down.
Ouch, poor baby! Would have been nice for them to have done something
with that at the end instead of joking about Sam in a tiny tank top,
because I certainly didn't need the reminder of that embarrassing
scene. ;)
I'd mention the Lucy scene, but I'm actually not overly fond of it. ;)
Things I missed:
Did they ever determine if the sickness was naturally occurring or
somehow Goa'uld-generated?
How did this illness spread once on Earth? I've always been confused
about that. Is it airborne or by touch? I suppose it must have been,
it just doesn't make that much sense to me.
Hmmmm.

I, too, love the interchange between Jack and Daniel as they embark for the Planet of Light the first time. I realize that money makes it impossible to send through teams of that size every week, but it's more believable to me than four people on foot.
Part of me totally agrees with Sam, and part of me understands Daniel.
It has been a while since I've watched the episode, but as I recall Daniel is flat out wrong. There's no evidence anywhere that "primitive man" (another cringe-worthy term) used rape as a mating behavior. Unless my data is out of date -- other than humans, only the orangutang has been observed to commit rape. But this is probably where I should just nod and say, "yup, bad, bad science and biology and anthropology."
...even if that's not HIS specialty, either, it's closer than theorhetical astrophysics.
Sometimes, I think Jack is writing this show and one scientist is the same as any other. *grin*
I used to feel lukewarm towards this episode. The cliched "devolve/re-evolve" trope is one of my pet peeves - but then I realized that this was Janet's first episode. And I LOVED Janet in it. She sounded like a doctor. She has chemistry galore. She doesn't just play a caring doctor; she IS a caring doctor. Love, love, love Janet. I thought she and Jack had a little sparkage, though I'm glad they didn't pair her off. Not only do I dislike how they write, "romance," but there's something a little odd to me about dating your doctor.
I'll admit it - I loved the Lucy scene. Well, Teal'c's half. CJ does just a perfect straight man. I still laugh out loud each time I see it.
In the end? The episode stank but for the character moments redeem it.

Date: 2006-04-13 12:37 pm (UTC)See, to regular schmoos like me, that explanation sounded reasonable coming from Daniel's mouth. Taken with a huge grain of salt, considering earlier he admitted he didn't even know what they were looking at. ;)
I've always been forgiving of Stargate's science, if I can use that word. Forgiving implies that I know they're way off base, but I'm an English major. Throw in some scientific terminology and I'm convinced. Heh.

Date: 2006-04-13 01:17 pm (UTC)It's the Daniel-as-archaeologist that I get hung up on but that's true of anyone watching the movie/television portrayal of something they know more about than the writers. I understand lawyers cringe at Law and Order but it looks plausible to me.
I still love Janet in that episode. *wibble*
