Barn Dance

I don't know why, but an awful lot of my dreams take place in or around my childhood home. Maybe that's my subconscious telling me it wants to be a kid again, or my conscience telling me I'm a bad daughter for not setting foot in the home for over five years now. Anyway.

I was upstairs in the girls' room (yes, many, many children in the house and three bedrooms; one for ma and pa, one for the boys and one for the girls), getting ready for bed, I think. A deep red Mercury Cougar pulled up the driveway and I peered out the window. It was, no surprise since they were on my mind, Dean and Sam Winchester. I have no idea why they were at my house, but obviously it couldn't have been good.

My mom invited them in and started cooking for them. Traditional Sunday brunch - eggs with green pepper, cheese (and sometimes ham, ick), bacon (ick), toast and orange juice. There were also caramel and orange rolls. It smelled good, and that was when I realized I wasn't getting ready for bed, but getting ready to go out. I went downstairs, with baby carrots in my hand. I was going to use them as an excuse to go into the kitchen to ogle the Winchesters. They weren't there when I arrived, but it was clear they really liked my mom's cooking. They ate everything.

I was confused, so I ate the carrots instead of putting them in the fridge. I figured that would be good for my teeth. I heard music - Paul Simon's Late in the Evening. I went toward it and discovered the yard full of cars - and I noted the Mercury Cougar had moved. It was parked out past the garden and by the grove. The music came from a ramshackle shed that's on the property, and people were coming and going from there.

"It's a wedding dance," my mom told me. "We thought we could use the extra money."

I remembered that's where I was getting ready to go, and the music was very enticing. I started out, but my mom stopped me and told me I wasn't invited so I had better not ruin everything. I went anyway, and people were having a surprisingly good time in that little shed. I danced for a while, then got hot and went outside for some air. I walked to the grove, where a whole bunch of kids were following Dean and Sam around.

"What's going on?" I said.

"You shouldn't be here," they said.

I didn't believe them, but then I woke up. Just when it could have gotten interesting.
