Ugh, I haven't flown for a couple of years. Now it appears some airlines charge for: carry ons, seat choice, trick you into selecting extras and then refuse to let you remove the extras. It added $100 to the airfare. Are you kidding?

Ho freaking ho.

I was going to book yesterday, when the prices were actually $50 lower - but as fate would have it, my power went out at 5 PM and did not return until 3 AM. I did not have a chance to hop online at work today, soooo. You snooze, you lose double extra.

I interviewed for another position at work today. First interview, it was awkward. We'll see. The pay is greater, so I can afford exorbitant airfare better. Sheesh. That's not even counting the pet boarding* and sitting, and the parking since I have to drive from rural to urban for the airport. I really only miss living in Seattle when it comes to airport access! No lie.


*15/day for cats is not a terrible rate, but multiply by four and then by 10 days. OMG. I can't.

Wow. You could go on vacation for the price of that pet boarding, lol. (Though not for 10 days unless you went somewhere very cheap.)

And yeah, usually the super budget options don't let you bring carryons and seat choices. Sometimes the super cheap airlines are not worth it. You'll get dinged on the fees and also really bad service, so the cheap fares aren't really that cheap...I've found in the past that cheap European airlines are ok, because the consumer protections are better there, but Spirit etc give me hives.

Yeah, and that's bare bones boarding at a vet's office. There are fancy places you can take your pets (if you truly love them, I guess) which I'd probably do if I had only one. I do not regret my critters, but people who don't have them really can't fathom the added expense.

I have a little buyer's remorse on the ticket, but it's too late now. I'm just glad it's not a redeye. I went with Sun Country - supporting local MN airlines, I try to tell myself that's noble. Haha.

Seattle and Portland are the best for access to the airport. I've taken TriMet (Portland's public transport) light rail to PDX in the past, and it's so much better than taking a $50+ cab ride! And I get you on the pet boarding. When we had 2 adult Great Danes we had to budget on an extra $75-100/day in boarding because they needed the largest kennels, etc. Thankfully they stayed together, but sometimes prices went up if we didn't plan far enough in advance.

Yes, it's been nearly a decade, but whenever I have to travel I have wistful memories of hopping on a bus to hop on a train and boom, there you go. Travel now is first a car trip, then a shuttle, then a flight, then... it's generally two hours before I actually get home.

Great Danes - oof, yeah. The $15 pricetag for my guy is strictly because he weighs 15 lbs. I prefer bigger dogs (don't tell him), but I'm grateful he's a little mutt.
