Had an "interesting" conversation with my mom today.

Cut for anyone not interested in religion, politics and holiday nomenclature )

That kind of soured my day a little bit, and also made me regret quashing my inclination to buy the Kwanzaa stamps for my Christmas cards this year...but if the post office ever does Festivus stamps, I am SO THERE.

Ugh, what a day. Actually my fault for forgetting we had a meeting that lasted nearly three hours. It was actually very informative - a VA rep came out to talk about their programs and basically how the VA works, as from the outside it sure can seem like it doesn't work at ALL. I learned, for example, that my state is the only state with a VSO dedicated to serving LGBTQ personnel and one of only five who have one dedicated to women. In light of President Psychopath's latest ban... ugh. Let's not go there.

Anywhooo, it was the kind of afternoon that required a trip to the cat room to snuggle some kitties. Bad timing, as it was wet food time and they were all going bananas. I managed two good cuddles with two good kittens.

Tomorrow, puppies! In puppy-related news, someone let their standard poodle wander around, never claimed him and so he's up for adoption. He is HANDSOME OMG, and so smart he 1) let himself out of his kennel when in quarantine, 2) let himself out of quarantine altogether and 3) let himself out of the shelter and was down the road half a mile before anyone caught up to him. I checked for opposable thumbs, but didn't see them.

Earlier in the evening, he mentioned a friend who considered himself quite knowledgable about films. Everyone's a critic.

Me: I want to see Munich. I also want to see Brokeback Mountain.

Him: Ah. ____ says that movie is nothing but a political gambit for liberal Hollywood to push issues like that into the mainstream.

Me: And, but, so, therefore? Why shouldn't that issue be pushed into the mainstream? If it were left up to the current administration, only one side would be presented...and that's hardly giving people the chance to 'warm up' to any sort of (gasp) differences. It can't work like that. Politics is about getting people on your side, understanding what you represent. If the media is a ready tool, why wouldn't Democrats use it?

Him: ____ also says we'll see more and more of that liberal stuff being pushed by the media, as a means to influence the populace.

Me: Again, I'm not sure that's such a terrible thing. Did your friend actually see this movie? (Trying to get back on topic.) I think it was simply a good story on paper before it was put on the big screen. Maybe the author had some agenda to push, but who doesn't?

Him: Uh, I don't know if he's seen it.

Me: If he has, it sounds to me like he's let his own political leanings influence his view of the film. You said he's interested in a good story - I've read the story and it's not bad. But he can't see the good story because he's too consumed with his own political viewpoint.

Him: My issue with the media's liberal slant is...who's going to speak up for the Kansas farmer??

Me: It sure as hell won't be the Republicans. So far all I've seen speak for the Kansas farmer is Ben & Jerry's, a liberal company, by the way.

Him: Oh, look, Fear Factor is on.

(I'd also like to state that during the course of this touchy subject, I managed not to out and out insult the party I favor least. He, however, took the first opportunity he had to bash everyone who voted blue in the last election, by agreeing with me that most of the voting public is uneducated about the issues and candidates and then stating that those people were all located in urban areas like NY, LA, Seattle...)
