Ah, Hot Chip! Always with the melancholy lyrics that should depress, but the beat that makes you want to dance. I bet this would sound amazing acoustic and mellow, though. See also: One Life Stand. Dance with me like Dieter.
It's Thursday! SPN day!
I'm taking tomorrow off, because we get our birthdays as a paid day off, and since mine falls too closely to the end of the year/Christmas I almost never get to take it on the day, or even in the same year. If I don't take it tomorrow, chances are I'll skip it entirely. Hells no. Not after the yuckfest of 2009.
You should listen to this
Aug. 14th, 2009 07:54 pmWhy? I dunno, but I really recommend this Avett Brothers song on last.fm or here on imeem. I've been on a kick lately. Probably because they're coming to town and KEXP tends to ramp up an artist's plays when they're about to do a live show.
Don't listen if you have an allergy to indie folk.

Music. It's not new.
Mar. 22nd, 2009 01:06 pmI just love it. I've probably pimped it before. It really doesn't matter how many times I hear Arcade Fire's Intervention, I get a strange little thrill. If that doesn't work, you can hear it on Imeem here.
Plus the lyrics? S4 SPN.
( Lyrics )
Seriously, just goosebumps.
Also, I suppose I should be embarrassed to admit I adore this Enya song. But I'm not.

How about a happy song?
Jan. 27th, 2009 10:17 amThe Banana Boat Song.
Of course, I instantly recall Beetlejuice when I hear this, but I also have fond childhood memories. We used to play a lot of records when I was a kid, and Harry Belafonte was always a favorite.

Jan. 23rd, 2009 09:52 amWe expected something, something better than before.
We expected something more.
Do you really think you can just put it in a safe behind a painting, lock it up and leave?
Do you really think you can just put it in a safe behind a painting, lock it up and leave?
Walk away now and you’re gonna start a war.
or
Oh, thinking of heaven, oh thinking it's night
Oh, thinking of heaven, oh maybe next time.
Though both singers probably have voices most wouldn't like, especially the latter. ;)

Dec. 1st, 2008 10:50 amOn the plus side, I'm wearing my fabulous red shoes today.
And I'm loving the Brian Eno/David Byrne collaboration. Life Is Long is from the album. Ooh, I like Home, too.
But you definitely have to not hate David Byrne to enjoy those tunes. ;)

Nov. 22nd, 2008 02:03 pmI need to go music shopping. I still like to buy CDs. I know I'm old school, but there's that certain feeling I get when I walk into Easy Street or Sonic Boom or Silver Platters or Everyday Music that I just can't get with downloaded music. Easy Street especially evokes that unnamable feeling.
On my list to buy, Longwave's latest Secrets are Sinister. The Devil And The Liar is on repeat at the moment. It's very Longwave-y. No Direction is pretty good, too - I like the way his voice kinda breaks. Both are on Imeem. Last.fm doesn't seem to have much from the new album, which is a damn shame. Not that any of you actually click on these links. Heh. ;)
Okay, off to go make the Winchester brothers hug some more.

I finally found this uploaded somewhere. Yay! Such a melancholy song. I love it no matter how many times I listen to it.

Random MP3 post
Oct. 22nd, 2008 02:27 pmNo, this isn't a meme. No one ever gets all the songs when I play that game. I'm just enjoying the music today and thought I'd share a random ten from my non-iPod.
1. The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel
2. Let Them Knock by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (Alt: 100 Days, 100 Nights)
3. Olsen Olsen by Sigur Ros (I cannot believe this album is almost ten years old.) (imeem)
4. Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel
5. This Place is Haunted by DeVotchKa *loves* (imeem)
6. Sometimes Always by The Jesus and Mary Chain (imeem)
7. Bros by Panda Bear
8. Thrice All American by Neko Case *loves, but it's not for country-haters!*
9. Sexy Boy by Air
10. Alseep in the Back by Elbow (*breaks my heart*) (imeem)
Runners-up:
Take Your Medicine by Cloud Cult (suck up, suck up and take your medicine) (imeem)
Drive by The Veils (they cover R.E.M. and it actually works, yeah)
and also
Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois by Sufjan Stevens (imeem)
Ring the Bells by James (version used on D.P.O.)
I tried to find them on last.fm. Unless otherwise marked, that's where they're linked. :)

Splurge, much?
Oct. 11th, 2008 04:01 pmI just spend $228 on a dress. I thought about it a lot for a week, so it's not an impulse buy. I enjoy that it's handsewn and by a local artist, which to me makes it much easier to swallow the cost than if it had a famous label on it. Plus, the artist uses vintage silks from kimonos, which is cool and a half.
This is not me trying to talk away any guilt. :) I can wear this dress to work and, if I ever have cause, out. It is also not super-trendy, so it will last for years unless my body changes drastically. I'd show a picture, but I forgot my camera at work.
I would like to purchase shoes now. Not for this dress. I have a red satiny shirtdress with off-white ovals printed on it and I've no shoes to go with it. Maybe tomorrow.
On a total different tangent, I urge people to listen to Low's "Sunflower". The song always gives me a shiver, probably always will. Low is such an underrated and underplayed group.

Oct. 9th, 2008 03:21 pmKEXP's counting down the highly subjective best 903 albums of all time during their fall pledge drive. I've enjoyed most of it, disagreed with some of it. But mostly it's reminded me of songs I haven't thought of in ages. Like this one, unfortunately on Imeem; unfortunate because it's a good song and some of y'all won't be able to have a listen:
I am a Scientist
( Another Sam Winchester song? Whatever it is I think I see, becomes Sam Winchester to me. )

Where is my motivation?
Sep. 1st, 2008 02:28 pmI've got Daniel Jackson paralyzed from the waist down and Sam and Dean Winchester being tossed around every which way, and yet I cannot seem to focus on writing today. Like yesterday, I'm also bored with TV so that's not an alternate for me.
So, basically, I'm just sitting here literally staring at the walls and listening to Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song), which gives Lilith more power than SPN has managed to so far, I think.
Jeez, I love that song.

I don't like admitting it or talking about it, but sometimes I get blemishes along my hairline and behind my ears. It's gross. It's not that I don't bathe or anything, but hair on my neck and sometimes even an itchy clothing tag will cause problems. A bit of tea tree oil usually clears the problems right up.
Anyway, for the last year or more, I have struggled with one spot. I could feel it back there, so I'd hit it with tea tree. Failing that, the next step was glycolic acid. When that too failed to solve the problem, I'd douse it with salicylic acid. I did all of this by feel, and the bloody thing just would not go away. I actually avoided hair salons and putting my hair up because of this blemish - who wants to flash something unsightly if they don't have to? (I'd eventually have to go get a hair cut, cringing with embarrassment all the while, of course.)
Yeah. Uhm. Today I finally had the wherewithal to grab a mirror and look at this bothersome blemish.
As it turns out, salicylic acid treatments will do nothing to get rid of a mole.
LOL, how stupid am I? (Don't answer that.)
While I'm here: Murder in the City by The Avett Brothers. Nice little song, in a twangy kind of way. The last line of lyric is especially poignant, I think.

Jul. 26th, 2008 02:45 pmI can't get Wrapped in my Memory out of my head again. Everytime I'm reminded of it, it gets stuck for days.
You gave me something to believe in
and that’s the best thing anyone can give.
And you’re wrapped in my memory like chains.
(Yeah, you’re only a memory now)
And you’re wrapped in my memory like chains.
(Yeah, you’re only a memory now)
I can’t wait until we see each other again.
I can’t wait until we see each other again.
I can’t wait until we see each other again.
And you’re wrapped in my memory like chains.
Also, there's an elemetary school about a block and a half away from my apartment. (Cemetery on the left of me, kids to the right...very age diverse.) I enjoy walking by the playground and seeing kids in their natural, exuberant element. Once, the playground was completely empty except two stlyishly dressed women in their mid forties, playing tetherball and giggling like mad. Now if the mere idea of that image doesn't put a smile on your face, you might be dead inside.
Today, I found the kid graffiti too amusing to resist. These aren't quality shots, just simple captures.
