Millions of peaches

Peaches for me.
Today is just about perfect. The sun's out, there's nary a cloud in the sky, the breeze is just strong enough to keep a person cool. I decided it was a good day to take the long way 'round to the grocery store, where I needed to pick up milk and fruits and veggies. There's nothing like the view on 8th W, looking out over the bay. This way, too, I can avoid the crowds blocking the sidewalks on QA Ave.
I picked up a bunch of peaches - it's peach-o-rama time. No, these aren't for pie. They're for regular eating. In theory. *cough* Anyway, I also bought a couple cans of soup to have on hand when I don't feel like making anything. And a jar of pickles.
I bring my own bag to carry groceries in. It's not really a conscious environmental thing - it's just SO much easier to carry my own bag versus the stupid plastic grocery bags. But my own bag isn't one of the billion manufactured because people are freaking out about plastic bags (I find it ironic that reusable bags had to be created just for this purpose. Like there aren't canvas totes, etc, people could use?). This seems to cause baggers problems. I tend to bag my own because they look so perplexed on how to do it. Whatever, no big, because after six years here I still find it odd there are people who bag groceries for me. I miss Cub and its long conveyor belts and self-bagging.
But today, the bagger plowed ahead while I was busy running my stupid "savings card" through. Here's my problem: he put the peaches and tomatoes on the bottom of the bag and proceeded to drop the cans of soup and jar of pickles on top of them.
Me: Whu...wai *head desk* Oh, damnit, my beautiful peaches!
I think the produce should be all right, but seriously, wtf?
Oh, you know I can't resist linking to Peaches.

Date: 2008-09-07 09:02 pm (UTC)I just love that band in general, except for how freakin' long it takes to type or say their long freakin' name. (Makes me wanna go, "Can I just call you fhqwgads?")
I also use a canvas bag, at least whenever I remember to take it along. It holds a lot more and it's a lot easier to tote it up the stairs to my third floor apartment, rather than slinging five dozen plastic bags over my arms. They pinch.

Date: 2008-09-07 09:40 pm (UTC)Oh, those little plastic bags cut the circulation off in my fingers really fast. I can't walk a mile toting those things. No way.

Date: 2008-09-07 09:42 pm (UTC)*sigh* I meant whose.

Date: 2008-09-08 12:29 am (UTC)Of course, that was paper bags, and as soon as plastic came along, everything just got thrown together. Canvas doesn't seem to have changed that.
Last week, I had a kid put a loaf of bread in first, a six-pack of soda on top of that, and one of those prepared meals, with rice and chicken marsala *sideways* (and leaking) beside them. The dog food cans went in after that. I pulled everything out and repacked it, and both the bagger and the cashier stared at me like I was a total nutjob the whole time.

LOL, I took my bag to the counter behind the instore Starbucks, unloaded everything and repacked, too.
