I think the "no liquids in carry-on" rule for air travel is 1) stupid and 2) really stupid. I was just thinking about this, because if I want to carry on my suitcase as well as a messenger bag, I can't bring make-up of any kind or hairspray. Or shower gel. Or body lotion. Or my friggin' tube of lip gloss.

I can't really afford to buy new once I get to my destination and then dump it again to fly back. Maybe some of these things aren't necessities, but I'll be damned if I walk around with no blemish concealer or the tea tree hydrosol I use to refresh my skin and keep away the nasty bugs that ride around in airplanes.

I fail to see how removing my right to carry personal hygiene and beauty products on an airplane is a productive way to "combat terrorism."

I agree. It's ridiculous. The other thing is water! Planes get really, really dry. I never fly without carrying my own bottled water. The little bit of drink they serve you is never enough on the plane. I sip at water all the time, and I need to if I start feeling a bit icky or whatever. I also carry my own snacks because airlines don't know what "vegan" is (or "vegetarian: no dairy).

They give me salad dressing with cheese & heavy cream in it. One time, we ordered three separate veg/no dairy meals for me and the kids. We did everything right. We called way ahead of time, called a week or so before to confirm, and called again the day before. What did we get? One time, we got ONE (yes, one...for one adult and two hungry children) frozen bean burrito. No, they didn't cook it. Yes, it was still completely frozen. And that was the only time they got the "no dairy" thing right.

So, I bring my own food on the plane (mainly granola bars and the like). I wonder if they still allow that. But you couldn't eat one without plenty of water.

My opinion? Things are never going to be safe. People were fooling themselves thinking that they were safe in the past. I mean, you don't take foolish risks. The "new" rule that you have to buy a seat for an infant or toddler and put him/her in a carseat? That's a good rule. It makes sense. Wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle? That also makes sense. Not letting ordinary people carry bottled water on a plane? No sense. It's carrying it to the extreme.

For as long as that rule is in effect, I'm not flying anywhere--not that I had anywhere to go just now anyway.

This is why I'm postponing my plan to go visit flist people 'round the globe. It'll blow over; I can wait.

I don't think it's about terrorism. I think it's about beating us down until we no longer believe we're entitled to anything, which really benefits the pigs at the top.

Ditto. I can't fathom why people aren't more concerned about it.
