Know anyone who immediately ramps things into a state of frenzy for no reason? That's my boss. On Wednesday, we got scheduled an appointment for some non-English speakers, who happen to speak a language the State hasn't yet had a lot of information translated into, yadda. Boss goes into panic mode. Tells me I'm getting the appointment, flails around a bit.

Calm down, lady, I'm an adult and I can handle my job. Consult with our consumer communications liaison with the State to devise a plan on how to tackle the appointment. Mostly, the forms. The appointment is easy, we DO have a translation service. Anyway, I then proceed to do the appointment and not ten minutes in, the gentleman says, basically, "This is annoying. Send me the forms in English, I can have someone go over them with me."

So, panic and flailing for nothing. We do what the applicant wants, and if they want stuff in English, that's what they can get. Tada.

I will confess, though, I get a little reddish politically when I see someone has been here in the US for thirty nine years and still isn't comfortable with the native language. I guess I apply my own reasoning: if I moved somewhere, I would want to learn the language and culture, but perhaps that's because I would be moving there for that kind of immersion. A lot of people move to the US for economic and general wellbeing, NOT because they want to be absorbed into our strange culture. Which is fine, but then I feel a little grrr at having to bend to accommodate those choices when they want to use our programs.

Anywhooo. I'm sure that's a problematic stance on my part and offensive to some.

A cat and two buns
^The bunnies are still around, no one has managed to catch them yet. Earlier this week, the buns were all in the street and two cats had sentry positions, staring at them. It was cute, but I wonder if the cats were curious or were plotting to murder. Hmm.

Randomly, I have found the best method for heatless curls on hair that doesn't like to curl: two dutch braids. I did it on Thursday night, the waves held pretty good all day and even through to today, though they wilted a lot with the morning stroll due to the low lying cloud cover aka fog. Of course, you have to use product to help it hold - I braid while hair is still just a little damp, and spray it down with spray gel or use mousse. So, product vs. heat.

Which, btw, was rolling in as I strolled last evening and it's always a delight to see it come in across the water and mountains over yonder. Just so atmospheric.

Okay, ta!

Not offensive to me: I'm all for accommodating recent arrivees, especially if they had to leave their home country due to dangerous conditions and didn't have time to do any language acquisition ahead of time.

But I agree that if I moved to another country and planned to stay there longterm, I would do everything I could to learn the local language as well as I could. And I don't understand why anyone wouldn't.
