You make a good point in comparing this to Anakin's journey - sometimes a sideways look at things builds the tension better than knowing the whole truth.
It would have been nice to see Sam during Dean's stay in hell but we kind of got that in mystery spot. But I'm with you the curiosity of what Sam is up to and what he thinks he's doing is driving me crazy
