SPN Meta

No, I'm not going to do meta. I think I need to avoid meta. While some of it is very wonderful and I'm impressed by the brainpower it takes to pull it all together, I'm finding some of it downright depressing...and it also makes me think people are overthinking things. When I read overthought metas, my own enjoyment tends to be lessened. Does Supernatural have flaws? You betcha. Huge ones.

But at the end of the day, for me, it's a show about two brothers trying to find their way in a big, particularly scary world, with lots of angst and h/c. And that's all I need at the moment.

hehe I love the SPN meta. I'm always a meta whore in any fandom. I can see why you might like to avoid it, though--not just in this fandom, but maybe especially in this fandom. *g*

I'm actually collecting up a post of some of my favorite meta to rec. hehe I won't be offended if you don't read them. :-D

I actually haven't come across many slash references in meta--or maybe I'm just too dense to get them. *g* That's entirely possible.

When it comes to other stuff... Just today I'm a bit depressed reading a whole bunch of Ellen love, but also Dean meta about how they want to see him with someone outside his family more so that Dean will realize that he doesn't need his family and will finally become a self-actualized person or something like that. I'm not saying that idea doesn't have some merit, but I guess I don't see Dean that way at all--and also, I like the angst and all the problems that both brothers have. That's why I watch the show.

So...sometimes it can be a bit depressing to realize that maybe I'm the only one who likes the things about the show that I like. I do want Dean to grow and change, but I think it would ruin the show if he suddenly turned into Generic Hero who was perfectly grownup and could handle any problem whether personal or professional or whatever. IMHO, that's part of what ruined Stargate for me, but of course I was still attached to the characters anyway, but they really stopped writing the characters in a way that I really liked fairly early on in the show.

I love the meta that delves into the brotherly relationship, too--or the family dynamics. I loved that meta by [livejournal.com profile] destina that was about their communication styles, which was a sort of follow-up to [livejournal.com profile] sargraf's picture meta about the same thing. I enjoyed both viewpoints.

I also tend to think people give too much credit to the writers by reading things into the stories that were probably never intended: the whole black/white thing with Bloodlust, for example.

??? What's that? *g* I don't think I've read anything about it. I've had a hard time keeping up lately, though.

The credit I give to the writers is that they're not shying away from stuff. They're writing the difficult scenes and not just skipping ahead and assuming that viewers will assume that they talked about it {whatever "it" is) offscreen. They seem to have the characters in mind when they write stuff. That's not to say that it's been perfect or anything, but it's been fun and interesting and I can't wait to see what they do next. I'm not hoping for anything in particular (like hoping that Dean will suddenly become an entirely different person or whatever *g*), but just along for the ride.

There are a few things I'm hoping won't happen, though. *g* For instance, as I mentioned in my post, I'm not enjoying the gore and ickiness this season so far. I was just watching an interview with JA from last season and he was describing the show saying it was not going to be "all blood and guts" and that it was going to be more spooky and eery than gory. I liked that about the show in season 1, and even then there were a few scenes I could have lived without. I don't want to watch a show where I have to sit there the entire time covering my eyes going: "Ew! Ew! Ew!" *g*

I wonder if they're trying to up the ick factor this season for whatever reason or to make things more scary, but I don't think it's any more scary than last season (so far) and I don't like the ickiness. *g*
