Tree In Water

Well, no rain! I didn't walk to store, but I did run errands. It better not rain tomorrow instead.
I've been looking to see if anyone in the area does free Thanksgiving or Christmas meals - I hadn't heard of anything since I've been here. It turns out a local non-profit is organizing the first Thanksgiving meal this year. Alas, I am too late to sign up to serve. I've also heard of a local restaurant who has in the past done an unofficial dinner. I will have to see which of these I can contribute best to. The former needs people to make/bring sides AND turkeys. The turkey idea, while nice, could be a disaster since I've never cooked a turkey before. I could do a big ol pan of mashed potatoes, though, or a stuffing casserole. Too bad I don't have any chafing dishes, though I think I know where I can get my hands on some.
At any rate, I'm very glad people who know how to do these things are doing it, because my next step was going to be figuring out how to organize such an event myself. Much as I like my Thanksgivings alone, I wouldn't mind being a bit more community-forward.

My favorite way to do turkey now is to skip the whole bird and just do a breast, and I dry brine it, which is like the perfect combination of minimal prep and maximum results. I've never done a whole turkey with dry brine, but I bet it would be fabulous. Dry brining tutorial: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-dry-brine-a-turkey-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-212426

As my friend had her family thanksgiving on Saturday we were just going to spend the actual day of Thanksgiving doing her Christmas decorating-- I try to help her every year as I don't do much. Not sure what will be happening now - it'll depend on stuff.
