Yes, you can really take your time and find a place that's right for you. It sucks when you're in a rush and have to take the first place available.
I'm also with you on the bathtub thing. We spent so many years living in government housing where we don't have a choice of unit. If you refuse what they give you, they probably don't have another house for you.
I've lived in houses/apartments with bathtubs that *used* to have those sticky things on them, but they were removed, so it's all gross. In AK, our bathtub had these weird stains on it that looked like someone puked on the side of it, but you couldn't get it off. That was my personal favorite.
